A high-quality scented candle can bring joy and comfort to your home for months—if you take good care of it. Proper care not only extends the candle’s burn time but also ensures that the fragrance is released evenly and the candle burns smoothly. Many people overlook candle maintenance, leading to uneven burning, tunneling, or weak scent throw. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your scented candles.

First, the first burn is the most important. When you light a new candle, let it burn until the wax melts completely across the entire surface—this usually takes 2-4 hours, depending on the candle size. If you blow it out too soon, the wax will tunnel, meaning only the center burns, and the wax around the edges will remain unused. Tunneling wastes wax and shortens the candle’s life, so be patient with the first burn.

Second, trim the wick before each use. Use a wick trimmer or scissors to cut the wick to 1/4 inch (6mm) before lighting. A long wick will cause the candle to burn too hot, produce more soot, and may even cause the candle to crack. Trimming the wick also helps the candle burn evenly and releases the fragrance more effectively. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from children, pets, and flammable objects.

Third, store your candles properly. Keep scented candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources (like radiators or windowsills). Sunlight and heat can fade the candle’s color, melt the wax, and weaken the fragrance. If you have unused candles, store them in an airtight container to preserve the scent. Avoid storing candles in the refrigerator, as the cold can cause the wax to crack.

Finally, reuse the candle jar. When the candle has burned down to 1/2 inch (1cm) of wax, don’t throw it away—reuse the jar! Place the jar in a bowl of hot water for 10-15 minutes to melt the remaining wax, then wipe it clean with a paper towel. The jar can be used as a small vase, pen holder, or storage container for jewelry or cotton swabs. With proper care, your scented candles will last longer and bring you more joy.
