Many parents want to create a comfortable home atmosphere for their children, but are hesitant about “whether children can use aromatherapy”. Pediatric experts said that children can use aromatherapy, but they need to be accurately adapted according to their age groups to avoid safety risks.
Infants aged 0-3 should avoid using any aromatherapy. Children of this age group have underdeveloped respiratory tracts and skin, and are extremely sensitive to aromatherapy ingredients, which are easy to cause allergies, respiratory irritation, and even affect endocrine development. Preschool children aged 3-6 can use it cautiously, prioritizing reed diffusers.
The scent should be light herbal scents (such as lavender, chamomile), and must be used diluted – the ratio of essential oil to water should not exceed 1:100, and each diffusion should not exceed 15 minutes, keeping the room ventilated.

Children over 6 years old can relax the requirements appropriately, but they still need to avoid strong scents and irritating ingredients (such as mint, eucalyptus oil), and choose natural plant essential oil products.
Experts remind that children need to be accompanied by parents when using aromatherapy to avoid ingesting essential oils or touching high-temperature parts of the aromatherapy diffuser; if children have symptoms such as sneezing and skin itching, stop using immediately and seek medical attention.
